The historical roots of La Nicchia go way back in time and place. They are deeply entrenched in the soil of a remote Sicilian Island, isolated from the world... Pantelleria. “La Nicchia”, literally ‘The Niche’, symbolizes the value of an area by way of an image and a name that call to mind something to be preserved with care and dedication.
As Gabriele Lasagni of La Nicchia says, there are four main reasons Pantelleria capers are the best: 1. the island’s volcanic soil give the capers their particular taste; 2. the temperature of the island alternates between hot days and cool nights giving the capers their strong fragrance; 3. there is a rich tradition of growing and picking capers on Pantelleria; 4. and last but not least, the particular caper variety, which grows only on Pantelleria (the cultivar spinosa nocellara), is very special and rare.
